The Art Gallery of Alberta is a centre of excellence for the visual arts in Western Canada, connecting people, art and ideas. The AGA is focused on the development and presentation of original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art from Alberta, Canada and around the world. The AGA also offers a full-range of art education and public programs.
Not so long ago, it was called the Edmonton Art Gallery, and it used to occupy a stately building in the heart of downtown, east of City Hall. The museum doesn't have its own permanent collection, but rather lends art from a variety of sources. Some of the exhibitions come from the National Art Gallery of Canada. I love that we could really take our time enjoying the Chagall exhibition. Without the normal magnitude of art clambering for your attention one can settle into this body of work and enjoy it thoroughly. Well spent time and good coffee to finish a pleasant day.
The Art Gallery of Alberta contains over 5,000 pieces by artists from Canada and around the world. Pieces being displayed in the main collection are regularly rotated. Temporary exhibitions also regularly visit this museum and feature such varied mediums as photography and sculpture.
